"The House on Bloodstone Road" is filled with twists, turns and cliffhangers that make it a page turner – it is part mystery, part old-fashioned horror, along with delightful doses of macabre humor.
Set in 1930 – the story begins with Lerryn Tarn a young woman who has found it necessary to seek employment as a maid some distance from where she has been living with her widowed mother and siblings.
From the moment of her arrival at the brooding, old Victorian house, unsettling events began to unfold.
Soon Lerryn finds her life entangled with the horrors and secrets of Bloodstone House and its residents the beautiful, mysterious, young widow Vorrie Haverton, Mercy Denby the housekeeper who knows too much and uses it to control others, and the housekeeper's son, misshapen giant Uriah, whose livelihood is as shocking as his scarred face.
EXCERPT After an hour or so, finding it impossible to sleep, Lerryn got out of bed, and went over to where her one narrow window was and looked out into the night.
The rain, she noted, had stopped but the wind had arisen and being in the attic, she could hear it quite clearly as it howled and shrieked an eerie song over the tops of the chimneys.
However, the moon was out - a white glow in the sky. She had always found something reassuring and soothing about the moon. The window she was looking from was on the west side at the back of the house and from the light of the moon she could see an old cemetery - its tombstones gleaming in the dim light.
What was that? She wondered, as she stared out towards the old cemetery, past the white, wrought iron fence that surrounded it. Had she seen a light in the cemetery? How could that be?
At a lull in the wind, Lerryn heard a noise in the sudden quiet, and distracted she turned from the window. She was certain she had heard someone weeping. The sobbing seemed to go on and on and was heartbreaking to hear. It seemed to call to Lerryn in that great, dark house, until at last she put on her robe and re-lighting the lamp and taking it with her, went to the door. Very quietly, she opened it, barely creating a gap large enough that she could peer out into the hallway, and then hearing the sobs once more, she bravely left her room

A very mysterious house, a mysterious family with serious secrets, an unusual item that shows unusual things, and a young woman thrown into the center of it all. At first, I thought that this was going to be a great supernatural tale, (I read the title and was thinking: Vincent Price in The Fall of the House of Usher.) But as I started reading, I have to say that The House of Bloodstone Road is a REALLY, REALLY great horror tale. Not wanting to give anything away, I have to say that the characters in this story are very well written, and the settings were very well described. There is a particular character with a... well... lets just say that this character has a very disturbing artistic pastime. Other characters are involved in procuring certain items for money, and then there is Lerryn, a young woman employed by Mrs. Haverton, the young widow, and mistress of the house. They, along with the stern housekeeper, have their own well-written relationship sub-story.
This tale moved along like one of those classic horror tales, and although some of the horror elements were pretty freaky, I give author Helen Dunn, five stars and an A+ for this well written, and memorable work.
Mysterious? yes. Horror? yes. Macabre? absolutely. I believe that The House on Bloodstone Road would have been something that Mr. Price would have thoroughly enjoyed.
