The Emigrantguide to Oregon and California Lansford Warren Hastings Books Reviews
This book was a death wish for nearly 100 men, women and children who were looking for a shortcut to California in 1846. Save the money and take a greyhound bus.
The book was sent in excellent condition and I am satisfied with my book.
Very important historical document. This is the Hastings that the Donner fiasco was blamed on. Don't see that it was warranted. The Donner-Reed party was very rude to each other and their animals and no clue how to pack. They could have done better and it was not Hastings fault.
This is a reprint of the faked-up book which caused the horrific Donner tragedy and cannibalism of 1846. (See George Stewart's "Ordeal By Hunger".) I too am using it in a book on a similar tragedy involving the Death Valley 49ers, tentatively titled "The Evil That Men Do". Making reprints of original source materials, such as this by Hastings, available at reasonable prices is a great service by to America's writers. Hasting was basically a scumbag whose ambitions and lies cost one hundred to die miserable deaths in 1846 and again in 1849. You can read about the heroic survival of one of the Death Valley 49ers in my 1975 book, currently in reprint through and titled "Women of the West" by Dorothy Gray.
I bought this book by Lansford W Hastings because I have written a musical about The Donner Party. One of the key numbers in the score is called LANSFORD W. HASTINGS where he describes in song what his book is about...a short cut to California. The book is really interesting and full of information...unfortunately, misinformation, because Hastings never took this route....But 87 men and women of the infamous Donner Party followed his book...and the rest is a tragic story that unfolded in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1846.
I found it an interesting and informative read, and now I can understand WHY the Donner Pasrty choise to go the way they did.....Thanks!
Informative and interesting for anyone who wants to learn about the pioneer experience.
Lots of interesting detail.
Love this book...Arrived quickly and in great condition. Thank you.
